1972 Wolmaransstad High School, Wolmaransstad Std 10
1977 P.U. for C.H.E Potchefstroom B Proc (Major subjects: Criminal
law and Private law) ˇ1978 – 1980: State Prosecutor,
Vereeniging. ˇ1979 : Acting Magistrate, Vereeniging periodical court. ˇ1981: Control Prosecutor,
Vereeniging. ˇ1982 – 1984: Control
Prosecutor, Pretoria. I was inter alia involved in the training of
prosecutors. (February 1984 I resigned
because of the birth of my child) ˇ1987 – 1989: Legal
Administration Officer at Head Office, Department of Justice, Pretoria.
Amongst a wide range of tasks I also dealt with capital cases and
extraditions. Due to the sensitivity of
the matters I was issued with a special security clearance. I received a merit award
as well as an achievement award and was recommended by the then Minister of
Justice The Honorable Mr K Coetsee to his Department. ˇ1989 (August) – 1998: Magistrate at various offices. KLERKSDORP: I was inter
alia In charge of the Alcohol Safety School where lectures were presented to
sentenced accused by a social worker, a traffic officer and myself. I was for 12 months the
head of the Branch Office at Stilfontein. During which time we had a
Departmental inspection and received a clean report. The first black Prosecutor
at Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Office started his career in my Court. I was Requested by the
Head of Office to rectify the inherited delay in disposing of outstanding
inquests. I held a meeting with the SAPD to sort out the difficulties and
within a period of 4 months the situation was rectified. POTCHEFSTROOM:
I was involved in presenting lectures at the Juvenile Delinquency Group. I was Acting Head of
Office when Mr Humpel (The senior magistrate) was on leave or was occupied by
departmental duties e.g. inspections at the Offices of Lusikisiki (6 weeks)
and Giyani (5 weeks) and meetings at the Regional Office in Mafikeng. The last office as
magistrate was Brakpan. I was transferred there because of my husband’s
appointment as Regional Magistrate for Heidelberg and that being the only
available post at the time. (September 1998 I resigned because of the risks involved in traveling alone on a dangerous road and the unavailability of a post closer to home. I stay in Heidelberg). ˇ1999: Article Clerk at Van
Rooyen Wiersma Attorneys Heidelberg (G) ˇ2000 – 2001: Professional
Assistant (Attorney) at Liebenberg Malan Inc Heidelberg. ˇ2001 – I am now practicing under
my own name as A Van Zyl Attorney. My office is in Euckermann Street,
Heidelberg, Gauteng. As practicing attorney I
have been involved in all the under mentioned aspects of the law as well as
estates, third party claims, trusts etc.

COURSES: I attended an advanced prosecutors course as well as
a course for magistrates at Justice Training.
ACTIVITIES: I
was the secretary of the PSA Vaal Triangle for 18 months. I also was the
Secretary of the Magistrate’s Association, North West, for two years and served
as an elected elder in my church for a period of more that 2 years.
LANGUAGES: Afrikaans and English
INTERESTS: Reading, Walking trails and nature,
Music.
FAMILY: My husband is a Regional
Magistrate. We have three children. None of them are school going any more. Our
parents are retired.
